Mariana Nesnídalová continues the family clockmaking firm Hainz, founded in 1836 by Ludvík Hainz. She belongs to the seventh generation of the family, which, according to Karel Ksandr, director of the National Technical Museum, looks after tower clocks in particular, including the Prague Astronomical Clock.[1]
Contribution to the exhibition The Saga of the Hainz Family
For the 190th anniversary of the firm's founding, the museum in Prague opened an exhibition titled The Saga of the Hainz Family on 13 October 2026. Nesnídalová lent some of the exhibits and donated to the museum a current gear train of a tower clock.[1][2] The exhibition was presented to journalists by the museum director Karel Ksandr and the curator David Hamr, and it is open to the public until 28 March 2027.[1]
At the presentation, the curator Hamr highlighted the role of Nesnídalová as a continuator of the family tradition who took part in preparing the exhibition.[1] Nesnídalová said on the occasion: "It is almost unbelievable that today we have the chance to continue the work our ancestors began 190 years ago. One realises how great an obligation we have towards the past and the future."[1][2]
The Hainz family firm
The firm was founded by Ludvík Hainz in 1836, and from the 1880s its production programme focused on tower clocks.[1] Hainz took part in saving the mechanism of the Prague Astronomical Clock, which was threatened with disappearance in the 1860s; after repair the clock was restarted on New Year's Day 1866, and the firm has looked after it since then, except for the years 1948 to 1989, when it was nationalised under the communist regime.[1][2] Two continuators of the family, both named Ludvík, paid for their work after 1948 with imprisonment, according to the curator Hamr.[1] The firm now has its production in Lysá nad Labem.[1][2]
