Kyiv is the Ukrainian metropolis whose mayor is Vitali Klitschko. Ukraine has faced the Russian invasion since 2022, and the capital is among the targets of Russian air attacks.[1][2]
Attacks at the turn of September and October 2026
In the last week before 3 October 2026 Russian drones hit, among other targets, the building of the National Academy of Sciences in the city centre, residential buildings and energy infrastructure. During a large-scale attack on Wednesday 30 September, emergency power cuts were introduced in the city for the first time since spring. The bridges over the Dnieper were also repeatedly attacked: the South Bridge was damaged, and on 3 October drones hit the North Bridge.[1][2]
On Friday 2 October Klitschko said that Kyiv was in a very dramatic situation and that Russia was destroying the city’s infrastructure, logistics, housing, social facilities and energy supply. The same day the city defence committee met to discuss how the city functions under continuing attacks.[1][2]
The Czech embassy operates in Kyiv. According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, its staff remained in the city in October 2026 even after the Russian call for foreigners to leave.[1]
