Babí léto, or Indian summer, is the term for warm and sunny weather that appears in Czechia in autumn. The Czech Hydrometeorological Institute (ČHMÚ) said that 30 September 2026 was the warmest day of this year’s Indian summer, with temperatures exceeding 26 degrees Celsius at two stations and reaching 25 degrees or more at eight further stations [1].

Record temperatures on 30 September 2026

Temperature records for 30 September were set at three stations in the Šumava region, Vojtěch Umlauf of ČHMÚ told the Czech News Agency [1]. In Husinec-Řež near Prague, meteorologists measured the highest temperature of the day, 26.2 degrees Celsius, and in Doksany in the Litoměřice area 26.1 degrees [1][2]. Stations in the Central Bohemian, South Moravian and South Bohemian Region also reported temperatures above 25 degrees, and in Komořany in Prague the thermometer showed 25.1 degrees Celsius [1][2].

The temperature measured in Husinec-Řež exceeded the previous maximum for 30 September, set in 2011, when it was 26 degrees Celsius there. Meteorologists, however, regard as a true record only the highest value measured in at least thirty years of observations [1][2]. Such a maximum was recorded by the stations Srnín and Černá v Pošumaví in the Český Krumlov area and Horská Kvilda in the Klatovy area [1][2]. In Srnín the temperature of 24.8 degrees Celsius exceeded the previous record, from 2016, by two tenths of a degree; in Černá v Pošumaví the thermometer showed 23.9 degrees and in Horská Kvilda 21.6 degrees [1][2].

Further weather development

According to ČHMÚ, temperatures above 25 degrees Celsius could exceptionally appear on Thursday as well, but in the evening the weather in Bohemia was to begin to be affected from the west by a weakening cold front. Rain was expected on Friday in western and north-western Bohemia, especially in the mountains [1][2].

ČHMÚ said of the further development: “The weekend will again be marked by mostly sunny weather, and the Indian summer will continue with temperatures mostly around 20 to 22 degrees Celsius” [1][2]. According to the institute, the warmth was likely to last until the middle of the following week, when possible cooling from the north-west was expected [1][2].
