On 12 October 2026 the first snow of this winter lay on Sněžka. According to meteorologists of the Czech Hydrometeorological Institute (ČHMÚ), it was the first day this winter on which one of its stations reported continuous snow cover in the measurement taken at eight in the morning.[1][2] The figure was provided by the Polish meteorological observatory on the summit, which measured two centimetres of snow.[1][2]

Snow began falling on Sunday 11 October 2026, when it lay during the day on the ridges of the Krkonoše, in the Jizera Mountains and on Šumava. According to Novinky, it also snowed on Sunday on the ridges of the Ore Mountains.[1][2] The snow stayed on Sněžka because the temperature was below zero.[2] Meteorologists first recorded snowflakes on Sněžka on 24 September, when no snow settled.[1][2]

At noon it was around zero on the summit, and the wind chill temperature was minus seven degrees because of the wind.[1] In the morning the wind stopped the upper section of the cable car to Sněžka, which can run at wind speeds up to 60 kilometres per hour; the lower section to Růžová hora was running.[1]

For comparison, ČHMÚ stated that the first lying snow was measured on 2 October in 2025, as early as 12 September in 2024 and only on 15 October in 2023.[1][2] According to the forecast, the snow in the mountains was not expected to last long because warming was expected in the following days.[2]
