The state enterprise Povodí Odry is building the Rakovec dry reservoir near Klimkovice for more than 47 million crowns, with completion planned for the end of 2027.

The state enterprise Povodí Odry has been building a dry flow-through reservoir on the Rakovec watercourse near Klimkovice since February 2026. It is meant to catch flash-flood water, slow its runoff from the landscape and reduce the flood risk in Klimkovice and in the Polanka nad Odrou district of Ostrava, along the Rakovec and Polančice watercourses. The costs exceed 47 million crowns and construction is to be completed at the end of 2027. Funding comes, among other sources, from the European Union through the Operational Programme Environment 2021–2027.[1][2]
Specifications
Under normal conditions the reservoir will not hold water and will fill only when inflow is elevated. The main element is an earth dam 8.5 metres high and 133 metres long, together with a functional structure, an emergency spillway, a discharge channel and a service road. The site lies outside the built-up part of Klimkovice, about 200 metres north-west of the D47 motorway bridge.[1][2]
Progress of the work
In October 2026 the combined structure that will later cover the body of the dam was being concreted in stages. Culverts under the future service roads and the drainage pipes around the dam have been completed, and work continues on the area of the future flood zone, including off-stream pools. Drivers must expect increased truck traffic.[1][2]
Follow-up work
According to the mayor of Klimkovice, Jaroslav Varga (Občané Klimkovic), work on the Mexiko pond and land consolidation will follow the finished structure; the town cannot enter the land consolidation before the Rakovec project is completed. The town considers the pond's dam problematic. After the reservoir is completed, the Státní pozemkový úřad is to repair the dam. Comprehensive land consolidation in the Klimkovice cadastre was approved by the Ministry of Agriculture in March 2008.[1][2]
Povodí Odry also plans a dry reservoir on the Polančice for almost 90 million crowns and the regulation of just under two kilometres of the same watercourse. Both projects are to start in 2027.[1][2]
