The two-day 36th Autumn Book Fair began in Havlíčkův Brod on 16 October 2026. The main venue is the Ostrov cultural centre, with further events held in the nearby Vysočina Regional Library. According to the Czech News Agency, the programme includes more than a hundred sessions, discussions and author readings.[1]

Awards at the opening

The Senate President's Award for a book about freedom was received from Miloš Vystrčil (ODS) by the author Martina Kopečková for her book Žena v pasti (Woman in a Trap), which deals with domestic violence. The four nominated titles were chosen by book influencers. The award was presented for the second time; last year it went to Petr Třešňák for the book Důstojnost (Dignity).[1]

The Czech Astronomical Society announced the Littera Astronomica award and gave it to Antonín Švejda, curator of the astronomical collections of the National Technical Museum. The society's vice-chairman Pavel Suchan described him as a longtime expert on the instrumentation of the field, whose ability to put this knowledge into book form he called admirable.[1]

Exhibitors

A record 167 exhibitors registered for the fair. Roughly a fifth are small start-up publishers, associations and self-publishing authors. Fair director Markéta Hejkalová said it is an opportunity for them to draw attention to themselves, and in her view the Czech book market is becoming ever more centralised. At the opening she also recalled the Czech Republic's role as guest of honour in Frankfurt; according to her, many authors and publishers from there came to Havlíčkův Brod as well.[1]

Český rozhlas Vysočina broadcast live from the fair and published morning interviews.[2]
