During the night of Friday, 2 October 2026, wolves attacked a flock of sheep near the Šumava village of Javorná in the Železná Ruda area of the Plzeň Region, according to the breeder. Of thirteen sheep, three survived.[1][2]
Course of events according to the breeder
The breeder told Novinky that the wolves got over the electric fence and that nothing similar had happened in 22 years of keeping sheep. According to her, a representative of the national park administration was called to the scene and confirmed that wolves were responsible. Judging by the tracks, it could have been a pack of four.[1]
The breeder told Plzeňská Drbna that seven sheep were left dead in the enclosure and that she had to have another three put down. The three surviving animals are also injured, she said, and it is not certain whether they will survive. According to the breeder, it was an adult wolf with young ones. She said that a wolf easily gets over a 1.2-metre fence and that buying large nets is not worth it for such a small flock.[2]
Earlier attacks in the area
Plzeňská Drbna reports that wolves have attacked sheep in the past at other places around Javorná and Čachrov, for example in Chvalšovice. According to it, wolves killed a breeder’s sheep and several calves near the settlement of Keple, and in Chřepice they dug under a fence by the gate.[2]
