Vsetín is a town in the Zlín Region. Jiří Čunek spent sixteen years, with interruptions, at the head of the town: first from the end of 1998 to 2007 and again from December 2014 to 2017, when he stepped down after being elected governor of the Zlín Region. He last became mayor for the full four-year term after the 2022 municipal elections.[1]

Municipal elections

In the 2022 municipal elections the ANO movement won in Vsetín with 20.06 percent of the vote and five seats; the Christian Democrats were second with 16.94 percent and four seats. ANO formed a coalition with the Christian Democrats, Nestraníci, the ODS and the PRO-pořádek-rozvoj-odpovědnost Vsetín group, but Čunek became mayor.[2]

Nine groups ran in Vsetín in the municipal elections of 10 October 2026, the same number as four years earlier. [5] The new VS21 movement won with more than 40 percent of the vote. VS21 ran in the town for the first time; its leader is Martin Metelka, director of the Masaryk Grammar School, the Secondary Medical School and the Higher Medical College in Vsetín. [3] The Vsetín srdcem a rozumem list, led by Čunek, received over 16 percent and finished second. According to Czech Television, the list was put together by the Christian Democrats with independents. [6] According to results reported by the Czech News Agency, VS21 received 40.50 percent of the vote and ten seats in the 21-member council, while Vsetín srdcem a rozumem received 16.17 percent and four seats. [4] ANO, with 12.63 percent and three seats, took third place. The ANO list was led by deputy mayor Petr Kudlík. [5] Metelka said he wants to seek the post of mayor, in which case he would leave his job as grammar school director. [3] Čunek said he will not seek any post in the town's leadership.[1][2] According to Čunek, coalition talks are a matter for the election winner, and he added that much work had been done in the town and that the centre and the area around the new railway station had been transformed. [5] Čunek called the result a triumphant victory for VS21 and said he was surprised above all by the size of its lead. [4] The Vsetín ice hockey team leads the first league after a 4:3 win over Chomutov in the 11th round, played on 10 October 2026. [7] Vsetín is four points ahead of second-placed Tábor in the table with one match fewer played; a week earlier it had suffered its first defeat of the season, against Havířov. [8]

Players of the Vsetín club NK Austin won the first semi-final match of the extraliga against Liapor of Karlovy Vary 5:2. [9]
