Jiří Čunek (KDU-ČSL) is the mayor of Vsetín and a senator.[1][5] He was mayor from December 1998 to February 2007 and again from December 2014. He resigned from the post in April 2017 after being elected governor of the Zlín Region. He began a third term in autumn 2022.[3]
After the 2022 municipal elections, which the ANO movement won in Vsetín, a coalition of ANO, the Christian Democrats and other groups was formed, and Čunek became mayor.[1]
In the municipal elections of October 2026 he led the slate "Vsetín srdcem a rozumem", which was put together by the Christian Democrats with independents. It finished second with 16.17 percent of the vote and four of the 21 seats on the council. First place went to the new movement VS21 with 40.50 percent and ten seats.[3][4] Čunek did not retain the office of mayor.[1]
Čunek told the Czech News Agency (ČTK) that he would not seek any post in the town leadership and left coalition talks to the winner.[2][4] According to him, the VS21 movement ran a long and intensive campaign, and voters were drawn to new faces.[1] He told Novinky that he would devote more time to his work as a senator.[5]
