The Václav Havel Library is an organization linked to the legacy of Václav Havel, the first president after the fall of communism. Among other things, its website vaclavhavel.cz publishes an overview of his life.[1]

According to Seznam Zprávy, the original Václav Havel Library operated from 2004 and ceased to exist in 2026. After disputes between its then management and Dagmar Havlová and sponsors, Havlová withdrew its licence and the organization was renamed 1. prezidentská knihovna.[2] As a co-founder of the Václav Havel Human Rights Prize, Dagmar Havlová withdrew in June 2026 her consent to the library using Havel's name; the library therefore stopped taking part in organizing the prize and was renamed in September. [5]

The management of Havel's work and copyrights was taken over by the Městská knihovna v Praze, as Dagmar Havlová announced at the unveiling of the Václav Havel Bench in Mariánské náměstí at the start of the celebrations of Václav Havel's 90th birthday.[2][3]

The Václav Havel Library also supported a proposal to name streets in the Prague Smíchov City project after notable women, submitted by the leadership of Prague 5 and the Sekyra Foundation. Its director at that time was Michael Žantovský.[4]
