Dagmar Havlová is the widow of Václav Havel, the first president after the fall of communism and a playwright.[1][2] In 2026 she announced that the administration of his legacy was being taken over by the Městská knihovna v Praze.[1][2]
Handover of Havel's legacy
The administration of Havel's works and copyrights was taken over by the Městská knihovna v Praze, which Havlová confirmed by unveiling the Lavička Václava Havla in front of the library's main building on Mariánské náměstí.[1][2] With this she opened the celebrations of the 90th anniversary of Václav Havel's birth.[2]
Hospodářské noviny, citing its sources, reported that the National Library of the Czech Republic was originally supposed to share in administering the legacy, which did not happen because of a dispute over the participation of Minister of Culture Oto Klempíř at the ceremony.[1][2] The Ministry of Culture and the National Library of the Czech Republic did not respond to the newspaper's questions and Havlová did not comment.[1]
Václav Havel Library
The change of administrator follows the breakup of the original Václav Havel Library, which operated from 2004.[1] After disputes with its then management and sponsors, Havlová withdrew its licence to use the name, and the organisation was renamed the 1. prezidentská knihovna.[1]
