The company ČEZ Group submitted to the Ministry of the Environment on 12 October 2026 the documentation for the environmental impact assessment (EIA) of a small modular reactor (SMR) project on the site of the Temelín Nuclear Power Station.[1][2] ČEZ expects the proceedings to conclude by the end of 2027.[1][2]

In the EIA process the ministry will assess the possible impacts of the project on its surroundings and propose how to limit them.[1] ČEZ said that in preparing the documentation it paid particular attention to water availability. According to the company, results so far confirm that even with growing drought taken into account, water should not be an obstacle to building the reactor.[1]

ČEZ spokesman Jaroslav Verner said that the ministry will publish the documentation, among other places, in the EIA Information System, commission an expert opinion and hold a public hearing. Anyone may submit written comments on the documentation within 30 days of its publication on the official notice board of the South Bohemian Region.[2]

Temelín is to be the first site in Czechia where a small modular reactor will operate. ČEZ has previously said it expects to start it up in the mid-2030s.[1][2] In 2024 it entered a strategic partnership with the British company Rolls-Royce SMR and acquired a roughly twenty percent stake in it.[2] The Rolls-Royce SMR plants are to have an output of 470 megawatts. Besides Temelín, ČEZ wants to build modular reactors in Dětmarovice in the Karviná area and in Tušimice in the Chomutov area.[2]
