The public-benefit company Jizerská has started producing artificial snow at the stadium in Bedřichov in the Jizera Mountains. It wants to open a cross-country loop there on 21 November 2026. According to the company's director Martin Kunc, the length of the loop depends on the weather and on whether it will be possible to switch on the conventional snowmaking supported by natural snow.[1][2]
Equipment
The snow is produced by a SnowPro 70 unit, which works at temperatures of up to 26 degrees Celsius. Bedřichov bought it before the previous winter season with the help of a European subsidy, as a supplement to the conventional snowmaking system, which is more powerful but needs temperatures below zero. According to Kunc, there is no point in running the unit in the rain, and losses of the produced snow are smaller at lower temperatures.[1][2]
Aims
The unit is intended to guarantee cross-country skiing and biathlon clubs that children's training can begin without trips abroad. The trail managers want to try out creating a snow reserve this winter, which they would cover with ice over the summer and open in the autumn; the loop could thus be cheaper and longer.[1][2]
The company Jizerská maintains the trails on almost the whole of the Jizerská magistrála. Bedřichov is its main starting point and also the only place on it where artificial snow is produced. In recent years the number of visitors to the trails in the Jizera Mountains has exceeded one million.[1][2]
