Customs officers from Ostrava seized 34 kilograms of kratom during a vehicle check in the Šumperk area in the Olomouc Region. Customs administration spokesperson David Kubenz reported this on 14 October 2026. According to him, law enforcement authorities are dealing with the case.[1][2][3]

The driver and the passenger are suspected of unauthorised handling of a psychomodulating substance. According to Kubenz, they said they had bought the kratom through the Telegram app in Brno. If their guilt is proven, they face up to two years in prison.[1][2][3]

Legal framework

Since November 2025, kratom and kratom extract have been among the psychomodulating substances; their production, import, distribution and sale are subject to statutory regulation and require authorisation from the Ministry of Health. Possession of legally purchased kratom for personal use is not in itself unlawful, but the quantity, origin of the substance and purpose of obtaining it are assessed.[2][3]

In September 2026 the Government of the Czech Republic approved a draft law referred to as Lex Kratom. It provides for a ban on online sales, raising the age limit for purchase to 21 and an excise duty of CZK 2 to 20 per gram or millilitre. The draft still has to be debated by the Parliament of the Czech Republic.[2][3]
