Road II/230 near Bečov nad Teplou in the Karlovy Vary Region is a regional road administered by the road administration and maintenance authority of the Karlovy Vary Region. According to Vojtěch Vaněk, spokesman of the regional road maintainers, embankment parts of the road body slid down in several places on the section between Bečov nad Teplou and Mnichov, or Mariánské Lázně, and the shoulder gradually broke away on the steep slope of the valley. The instability of the subsoil also showed in deformations and cracks in the asphalt surface [1].
Structural stabilisation
The road maintainers completed the work in September 2026; it had begun in March of the same year. The construction cost CZK 22.011 million and was paid entirely by the Karlovy Vary Region. The stability of the road body is now secured by reinforced-concrete retaining walls with a total length of 156 metres, founded on micropiles. The carriageway has new structural layers and new drainage [1].
According to Jiří Šlachta, director of the regional road maintainers, merely repairing the asphalt surface would not have solved the problem; the main task was to stabilise the whole road body and prevent further sliding of the embankment. According to Vaněk, the road was also insufficiently drained: water was meant to seep into the carriageway and remain in a shallow ditch; at the site the road runs with almost no longitudinal slope, and the drainage of water is limited by the steep slope and rock outcrops. The section is meant to be safer, especially in winter [1].
Drivers can use the section without traffic restrictions [1][2].
