The two steel masts of the Liblice B transmitter near Český Brod in the Central Bohemian Region, the tallest structures in the Czech Republic, are to be blown up between 12 and 16 October 2026. The daily Metro was the first to report the dates, citing information sent to owners of the surrounding land. According to the daily, cutting up and clearing the structure is to continue until the end of November [1][3]. The mining office approved the blasting on 3 September 2026 [3].
The masts are 355 metres tall each, stand 120 metres apart, and one of them lies in the cadastral area of Liblice, the other in neighbouring Přistoupim. They were completed in 1975 and 1976 [2][3]. The transmitter went into operation on 28 December 1976 and broadcast the second programme of the then Czechoslovak Radio on medium wave. The two transmitters had a combined power of 1,500 kilowatts [2]. The masts include Alimak lifts, which travel up to a height of 350 metres [3].
Czech Radio ended medium-wave broadcasting at the end of 2021. After that, the private Country Radio broadcast from Liblice on the frequency of 639 kHz until 31 March 2025, and no station has broadcast from the site since [1][2]. The masts are owned by České Radiokomunikace, which publicly offered the structure for sale in July 2026 and pointed out the considerable costs and risks for a new owner [1]. It found no further use for the masts [2].
The most urgent task was replacing the guy cables, whose service life, according to expert documents, ends on 31 December 2026. The estimated cost is about CZK 120 million. Renewing the anti-corrosion protection would cost roughly CZK 25 million, and repairing or modernising the lifts about another CZK 25 million [1][2].
