Nicușor Dan is the president of Romania. He arrived in the Czech Republic on a state visit on 30 September 2026; according to Prague Castle, it was the first bilateral meeting of the presidents of the two countries since 2014. He had previously met the Czech president Petr Pavel only briefly at international events. In May 2026 Pavel travelled to Romania for a summit of the Bucharest Nine, that is, the countries of NATO's eastern flank.[1][2]
Talks in Prague
The programme included a welcome ceremony at Prague Castle, talks between delegations and a joint press conference.[2] After the talks Dan said that he had discussed with Pavel the disinformation and hybrid campaigns from Russia that both countries face, and that they had agreed to cooperate in this area. According to him, Romania is succeeding in improving its ability to detect drones, and the conversation also concerned cooperation in energy, including nuclear energy.[1][3] On the subject of Russian attacks Pavel said that NATO states must make clear their determination to defend airspace and coastal waters.[1][3]
The presidents also discussed defence cooperation. Pavel sees an opportunity for Czech companies, for example in modernising small arms for the Romanian army, and mentioned an offer to sell L-39 Skyfox aircraft from the company Aero Vodochody.[1][3]
Meeting with the prime minister
At Kramář's Villa, Dan met Prime Minister Andrej Babiš (ANO). According to a press release from the Úřad vlády České republiky, Babiš supported the development of Romanian gas infrastructure and gas extraction projects in the Black Sea, and the two agreed on the need for secure supply routes. They also discussed economic cooperation, the defence industry and the preparation of the EU's multiannual financial framework. Babiš received an invitation to make a state visit to Romania.[1][3]
Relations between the two countries
According to the president's office, bilateral trade reached CZK 174 billion in 2025, of which Czech exports accounted for CZK 97.5 billion. More than 1,350 companies with Czech participation operate in Romania. A total of 1,576 people in Romania, mostly in the Banat, declare Czech nationality, and since the 2024 elections the Czech minority has had its own member in the Romanian parliament.[2]
