Referendum on gravel and sand extraction

Voters were asked whether they agree that the municipality should take all expedient legal steps against extending extraction to the sixth and seventh phases. Local concerns related to traffic, noise, dust, the character of the landscape and the impact on groundwater.[1][2]

Majetín has 964 eligible voters; 640 of them cast a valid vote, and turnout was 66 percent. A total of 497 voters came out against the expansion. The validity conditions were met, so the result is binding on the municipality.[1][2]

In a letter to residents, the managing director of the company Zepiko stated that the firm plans to move extraction further from the village, behind the railway line, without increasing the volume of extraction, and offered the municipality more than 70 million crowns if extraction continues. Mayor Miroslava Zavadilová said that the council chose a referendum so that the decision would rest on a clearly expressed will of the citizens.[1][2]
