Josef Klement is a senator for KDU-ČSL and leader of the party's senators.[1] In the Senate elections in October 2026 he defended his seat in the Žďár nad Sázavou district.[3]
He advanced to the second round by a margin of one vote, with 11,373 votes against 11,372.[2] According to the Echo24 website, in no district has the move to a runoff been decided by a smaller margin so far, the previous record being five votes; both candidates received an identical 25.62 percent of valid votes. [1] His opponent in the second round is Michal Šmarda, a candidate for Volt.[3]
Šmarda, a former chairman of the Social Democrats, won the first round with 12,254 votes, which is 27.6 percent. [1]
Klement ran his campaign under the slogan "Senate without sidelines" and said that six years ago he gave up the post of deputy mayor of Žďár nad Sázavou in order to devote himself solely to his work as a senator. [4]
