Jaslovské Bohunice is a site in Slovakia where nuclear installations have stood and still stand, and where the construction of a new nuclear source is being prepared.[1][2]

Nuclear power plants

The two units of the older V1 plant were shut down in 2006 and 2008 because of Slovakia's obligations to the European Union. The company Slovenské elektrárne (SE), part of the EPH holding (Energetický a průmyslový holding), operates its own nuclear power plant there.[1] According to Ekonomický deník, two Russian-type VVER-440 units operate there, which according to the latest estimates could remain in service until roughly 2055.[2]

Planned new power plant

The new nuclear power plant at the site is being prepared by the company Jadrová energetická spoločnosť Slovenska (JESS), founded in 2009 by the Slovak state and ČEZ Group. The new source is to have an output of around 1,200 megawatts; according to earlier information, the main partner of Slovakia is to be the American company Westinghouse. The Slovak government speaks of completing the new unit in 2040.[1][2]

In 2022 JESS obtained authorisation from the Slovak Ministry of Economy to build the new reactor, and in February 2023 it applied to the Úrad jadrového dozoru for a siting permit for the nuclear installation.[2] According to the CEO of ČEZ Group, Daniel Beneš, a feasibility study has been approved for the project, a certificate of capacity reservation, a positive environmental impact assessment, a siting permit under the Atomic Act and the necessary land have been obtained, and zoning proceedings have begun. Beneš called Bohunice the best-prepared site for a nuclear power plant in Europe.[1]

On 7 October 2026 ČEZ Group signed a contract to sell its 49 percent stake in JESS to the Slovak state.[1][2]
