Baron Jan Antonín Starck was one of the most important entrepreneurs of 19th-century western Bohemia. He lived at the château in Čemíny and owned the Čemíny estate, to which Touškov belonged. He was the patron of the Church of St John the Baptist in Město Touškov. He owned many mines in the area and, according to iDNES.cz, employed 12,000 miners.[2]
According to the mayor of Město Touškov, he had the church tower completed in its present form and acquired the tower clock and a new organ; together with his wife Anežka he supported the church, the town and its inhabitants. In 1848 he freed the people of Touškov from their existing obligations and fees to the manorial lord, for which the town magistrate sent him a letter of thanks.[1]
He died on 22 May 1883 at the château in Čemíny and on 25 May 1883 was buried in the family tomb beneath the Chapel of the Holy Cross in Touškov.[1] His remains were exhumed because of repairs to the tomb and on 3 October 2026 they were returned to it after a solemn Mass and a procession.[1][2]
