Krajská nemocnice Tomáše Bati in Zlín has joined the nationwide PARK project, which offers patients with Parkinson's disease interdisciplinary rehabilitation care. Under the project, the hospital's rehabilitation department provides education and regular exercise.[1][2]

Rehabilitation

According to the hospital's head physiotherapist Zuzana Strapková, the therapy focuses on improving mobility and balance, preventing falls, gait training and relieving stiffness of the chest, which affects the stability of the body. Patients practise fine motor skills with occupational therapists. Strapková said that regular physical activity slows the progression of the disease, and the hospital therefore wants to provide such care to patients in the early to middle stage of the disease.[1][2]

According to the hospital's spokesperson Dana Lipovská, education and exercise at the rehabilitation department are possible only with a recommendation from a neurologist or a general practitioner.[2]

Help beyond treatment

The neurologist and deputy head of the neurology department Petr Procházka welcomed the project as a broad foundation from which a patient will get answers to his or her questions. A doctor deals mainly with medical problems and treatment, whereas patients also need to deal with difficulties outside medicine, for example entitlement to a social benefit, a vehicle modification paid for by the insurer, or finding a speech therapist or psychologist. Procházka said that in a fragmented system a patient could get lost.[2]

Health professionals and non-professionals involved in the project have received special training in the issues of Parkinson's disease.[2] The hospital's neurologists currently care for about fifty regular patients with this disease.[2]
