The operations centre received an emergency call about a flat fire in Ostrava-Zábřeh at around 4:30 p.m. on Saturday 31 October 2026. According to Ostrava police spokeswoman Eva Michalíková, officers from the Ostrava-Vítkovice district station arrived first, within a few minutes. On arrival they saw an elderly man at a fourth-floor window, with thick smoke pouring from the neighbouring windows and flames visible [1][2].

The officers ran into the building, led the man to safety and handed him over to paramedics. One of them began extinguishing the affected room with a hose and put the fire out before firefighters arrived and took over. Other officers from the patrol service evacuated the residents of the affected floor and then of the other floors [1][2].

About ten people were evacuated from the building and nobody was seriously injured. Residents returned to their flats once the fire was out [1][2].

Police and firefighters are investigating the cause. According to Michalíková, the fire most probably started at a gas cooker, from where it reportedly spread through the extractor hood into the area of the service risers and damaged the water supply pipes [1][2].
