The Czech National Bank has completed an internal audit ordered by its Bank Board in connection with the case of unauthorised handling of funds at its workplace in Brno. The bank reported the result on its website on 29 October 2026. According to ČNB, the employee abused his many years at the Brno workplace, his knowledge of its processes, his managerial position, his good reputation and the trust of his subordinates. The audit also identified several areas in which control processes needed to be strengthened.[1][2]

The audit examined the circumstances of the case, the procedures for handling cash and the effectiveness of the control mechanisms in place. The Bank Board approved the measures already adopted and supported the introduction of further steps to reduce risks. Because the findings concern internal control and security procedures for the management and processing of cash, ČNB will not provide more detailed information on the audit conclusions.[1][2]

Police detained the bank employee at the end of July 2026. The Financial Analytical Office had alerted the police in the spring to his suspicious transactions on bank accounts. According to investigators, he is alleged to have stolen tens of millions of koruna at the Brno workplace. Police said the detained man had worked in the banking sector for a long time, is being prosecuted for theft and is cooperating with the police. The case is supervised by the regional prosecutor's office in Brno.[1][2]

ČNB said the case had no effect on its day-to-day operation or on the performance of its statutory tasks, and that it has terminated the employee's employment. The case is in criminal proceedings, in which the bank is the injured party and has claimed compensation for damages.[1][2]
