An eighteen-year-old Czech tourist died on Mount Pilatus near Lucerne, Switzerland, after falling in steep terrain on Thursday, 24 September 2026. The accident happened during free time that a group of Czech tourists had before a planned joint descent to the village of Alpnach. The case is significant in that it concerns the safety of Czech tourists on organised trips into alpine terrain and the investigation of the circumstances of the death by Swiss authorities.[1][2][3]*
Circumstances of the accident
The young man was part of an organised trip on Mount Pilatus. At the time of the accident, the group had free time before setting off together on the descent to the village of Alpnach. When the boy did not show up at the agreed meeting place at 1:30 p.m. and it was not possible to reach him by phone, the group called the police.[1][2][3]
The cantonal police in Nidwalden, to which the Pilatus area belongs administratively, had to intervene.[3] Rescuers found the young man already dead. The circumstances of the fall were not known at the time the report was published and were being investigated by the Swiss police.[1][2]
Reaction of Czech authorities
The death was confirmed by Foreign Ministry spokesman Adam Čörgő, who said that the Czech diplomatic mission is in contact with the family of the deceased and expressed condolences to the bereaved.[1][2][3]
