The Czech men's national ice hockey team represents Czechia at World Championships, the Olympic Games and other international tournaments. Among its most notable successes is the gold medal from the Olympic Games in Nagano in February 1998.[1]

Olympic gold from Nagano

Czech Television recalls that the word Nagano evokes the tournament of the century, an unexpected success, the triumph of an underdog over the favourites, and the goaltender Dominik Hašek. According to the broadcaster, the victory of the Czech hockey players at the Olympics in February 1998 brought enthusiasm among fans and a wave of patriotism and national pride. Its legacy and consequences are stronger than they seemed at the time, and in the Czechoslovak sporting century it is reportedly hard to find a more impressive moment.[1]

2024 World Championship

The team won gold at the 2024 World Championship. The captain of the roster that won the title was the defenceman Radko Gudas.[2] At this tournament the goaltender Lukáš Dostál had a goals-against average of 1.58 per game over eight games and a save percentage of 93.9. Several players on the team hold bronze from the 2022 World Championship, among them Dostál and David Pastrňák.[2]

2026 Olympic Games

Twelve countries play at the 2026 Olympic tournament in Milan and Cortina d'Ampezzo. The group stage begins on 11 February and the final is scheduled for 22 February. It will be the first Olympic tournament since 2014 in which NHL players are allowed to take part. Czechia, like the other participants, first announced six names of a preliminary nomination, and the rest of the roster was to be announced later.[2]

The first six players were the goaltender Lukáš Dostál from Brno, the defenceman Radko Gudas from Prague and the forwards Martin Nečas from Nové Město na Moravě, Ondřej Palát from Frýdek-Místek, David Pastrňák from Havířov and Pavel Zacha from Brno.[2]

Gudas already played at the 2014 Olympics, appearing in three games for the Czech Republic. Palát won the Stanley Cup twice with Tampa Bay (2020, 2021) and played at the 2014 Olympics in Sochi and at the 2016 World Cup. Nečas reached 83 points in 79 games in an NHL season. According to NHL.com, Pastrňák is the third most productive Czech in NHL history behind Jaromír Jágr (1,921 points) and Patrik Eliáš (1,025), having collected 833 points in 756 regular-season games. Zacha won gold at the 2024 World Championship, his first as a Czech national team player.[2]
