Alois Jirásek was a Czech writer. In the public history of Prague he is remembered in connection with 1918, when events leading to the creation of an independent Czechoslovakia took place in the Municipal House.
In April 1918, Jirásek read the National Oath in the completely filled Smetana Hall of the Municipal House. According to the Municipal House website, this event was one of the turning points of 1918, together with the adoption of the Epiphany Declaration on 6 January 1918 and the law establishing an independent Czechoslovakia on 28 October 1918. According to Adam Zábranský, the city councillor for property, the Alois Jirásek monument on Jirásek Square in Prague is to be moved a little further back as part of the planned revitalisation of the area around the Dancing House, with work due to begin in 2027. [2] Under the design, the paved area around the fountain will be enlarged and the remaining lawn is to be fenced with a low fence and supplemented with trees; the lawn planted two years ago for 200 thousand crowns has been trampled down again. [2] The capital city has had a study for revitalising the surroundings of the monument ready since 2022; the documentation for the building permit is only being prepared now, because the works include renovating the fountain and the issue of water had to be resolved.
