Viktor Orbán is a former Hungarian prime minister, whose successor is Péter Magyar. In the spring parliamentary elections he was backed by US President Donald Trump and Vice President J. D. Vance took part in his campaign in person, yet Fidesz lost the election [1].

The Wall Street Journal wrote that the US administration supports Orbán as a candidate for the next UN Secretary-General and that it itself encouraged him to run. According to the paper, Russia and China might also vote for Orbán in the Security Council, and no final decision has yet been made. The paper relies on an unnamed US State Department official and other sources, according to whom Orbán was receptive but does not want to run without certainty of winning. Orbán declined to comment at the paper's request [1].

Magyar called his possible appointment inappropriate and said it would be the beginning of the end of the UN [1].
