On 7 October 2026 the Krajský soud v Plzni sentenced a 29-year-old man to eight years of unsuspended imprisonment for the offence of intoxication (opilství). The case concerns an attack on his father and brother in Plzeň in November 2024, in which the brother died and the father survived. After the sentence is served, the court ordered the convicted man to be placed in protective detention (zabezpečovací detence). The verdict is not final.[1][3]

Legal assessment

The court concluded that the man had committed the act but could not be convicted of murder and attempted murder, for which the penalty range is 15 to 20 years or an exceptional sentence. He was punished for intoxication (opilství), which carries a penalty of three to ten years. The prosecutor had proposed an unsuspended sentence of six years. The presiding judge, Jan Hostaš, said that the panel imposed eight years because of the gravity of an act directed against the closest persons. The convicted man will serve the sentence in a prison with guard.[3]
