
The University of South Bohemia in České Budějovice is a public university based in České Budějovice, in the South Bohemian Region. According to its website, it educates about 10,000 students across eight faculties in more than two hundred bachelor's, master's and doctoral programmes.[1]
Faculties and Studies
The university comprises the Faculty of Economics, the Faculty of Fisheries and Protection of Waters, the Faculty of Arts, the Faculty of Education, the Faculty of Science, the Faculty of Theology, the Faculty of Health and Social Studies, and the Faculty of Agriculture and Technology.[1] Besides regular study programmes, the university offers lifelong learning courses for the public. These include accredited and non-accredited professional courses, interest courses, a University of the Third Age, and a children's university.[1]
Science and Research
The university states that it focuses on education and research in the natural sciences, humanities, health sciences, social sciences and technology.[1] It demonstrates its standing through its position in international rankings. According to its website, it placed 251st–300th in the world in the THE Young University Rankings 2023, ranking first among Czech universities. In the THE World University Rankings 2024, it was placed 1001st–1200th, which was 4th–8th in Czechia. In the QS World University Rankings 2024, it ranked 951st–1000th, ninth among Czech universities. In the Leiden Ranking 2024, it achieved 305th place in the world and first place in Czechia for the share of highly cited publications.[1]
CENAKVA, a research centre for aquaculture and biodiversity of hydrocenoses, is based in Vodňany, and the university describes it as a project unique on a European scale.[1]
Campus and Buildings
According to the university, the campus includes, among other things, a science and technology park, a student club, and a university nursery. Buildings are gradually being built and modernised, including new pavilions for the Faculty of Science, the Faculty of Agriculture and Technology, and the Faculty of Fisheries and Protection of Waters.[1]
International Ties
Since 2025, the university has been a member of the KreativEU alliance of European universities, through which it works with partner institutions on innovation, digitalisation and sustainability in education and research. According to the university, membership also supports student and academic mobility.[1] Since 2024, it has been a signatory of the Magna Charta Universitatum, a declaration of fundamental university values. By doing so, it has committed to upholding the principles of academic freedom, institutional autonomy, the inseparability of teaching and research, and openness and dialogue.[1]
The university cooperates with more than 450 universities worldwide, supports study and research trips abroad, and offers courses in foreign languages as well as exchange stays.[1]
