The US Open is a tennis tournament played at Flushing Meadows in New York, closing out the Grand Slam season. The women's singles main draw features 128 players.[2]
At the 2021 edition, Karolína Plíšková hit 24 aces in the second round, which, according to Czech Television, was a new tournament record. Over three matches she served 52 unreturned serves.[1] Her first serve in the tournament averaged around 175 km/h. [1] In the third round she defeated Australian Ajla Tomljanović, hitting twenty aces along the way, and advanced to the round of 16. [1]
Barbora Krejčíková entered the main singles draw of the US Open for the first time in 2021. She had travelled to New York before, but in singles she failed to get through qualifying in 2014, 2015 and 2017 to 2019, playing the main draw only in doubles and mixed doubles. She skipped the 2020 edition due to concerns about the coronavirus.[2] Before the 2021 US Open she had won Roland Garros and, in Tokyo, had won Olympic gold in doubles with Kateřina Siniaková. [2] Under WTA rules, this meant she was not allowed to enter any other tournament at that time. [2]
Plíšková is nicknamed the "Ace Queen", and she first appeared under that nickname at the US Open in 2017. [1]
