The Czech Republic will probably double its imports of natural gas from Algeria from the current 200 million cubic metres. Deputy Prime Minister Karel Havlíček told journalists in Algiers on 26 October 2026 and said that the Czech Republic had received a preliminary promise to that effect from Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune. According to Havlíček, this is a step towards greater diversification of supplies and towards a better position in price negotiations. He said Algeria is increasing its export capacity.[1]

Other topics of the visit

Havlíček and Prime Minister Andrej Babiš discussed possible deliveries of L-39 Skyfox subsonic aircraft from Aero Vodochody; according to Havlíček, this would involve 12 to 24 machines. Algeria currently operates forty Albatros aircraft, the predecessors of the Skyfox. The two sides also discussed joint production of tractors in Algeria, to which the Czech Republic would supply know-how and a substantial share of the parts. The Czech Republic is also interested in supplying trams from Škoda Transportation; the Czech delegation was to discuss a joint venture with Algerian partners on Tuesday 27 October.[1]

Opening the Czech-Algerian business forum, Babiš said that the Czech Republic sees Algeria as a strategic partner, with opportunities especially in mining, engineering, aviation and modern technologies. The working visit lasted two days, and the prime minister was accompanied by a large business delegation. Milan Sedláček, Vice-President of the Hospodářská komora České republiky, said that companies from energy, transport, healthcare, agriculture, aviation and the defence industry are interested.[1]

In 2024 the Czech Republic had a trade surplus of 2.4 billion koruna with Algeria. The main exports are cars and machinery, while chemical raw materials are imported.[1]
