Taiko, the company that organises the Prague Christmas markets, announced on 23 October 2026 that the main Christmas tree on Old Town Square will be a Norway spruce from Šimonovice in the Podještědí region of the Liberec Region. It is about 23 metres tall, its trunk circumference exceeds two metres, and it is estimated to be 50 to 60 years old. It stands on a slope on the boundary of neighbouring plots, and its owners had planned to fell it because it threatened nearby buildings.
According to ČT24, almost eighty trees from all over Czechia had been put forward by mid-October, and twenty advanced to the shortlist. The decision was made by representatives of the company Technologie hlavního města Prahy together with a dendrologist. The second selected tree, a spruce 21 metres tall from Rousínov near Česká Lípa, is to stand on Wenceslas Square.
A specialist firm is to fell the tree on 21 November 2026. A week later it is to be part of the opening of Advent in central Prague. Taiko's executive director Jan Dell said: “The demanding selection process ultimately produced two winning trees – one for Old Town Square and the other for Wenceslas Square.”
