Scio is a Czech company that runs a network of private primary and secondary schools and administers the National Comparative Examinations.[1][2] Besides Prague and Brno, it has schools in Plzeň, Kolín, Jihlava, Ostrava and České Budějovice.[1][2]
National Comparative Examinations
The examinations organised by Scio are used by some universities in their admissions procedures.[1][2]
Plan for a private university
In October 2026 the company announced its intention to found a private university in Prague, VŠ Scio, which from September 2027 would offer two bachelor's programmes: adult education and development, and innovative entrepreneurship.[1][2] In the first years it could admit 100 students to the first programme and 60 to the second, and it intends to raise capacity in the future. According to a company representative, tuition is to be CZK 80,000 a year.[1][2]
The company submitted its application for state consent to establish the school in September 2026. The ministry has 150 days to process it, and Scio is also waiting for the opinion of the accreditation authority.[1][2] With the application the firm had to submit outlines of the study programmes; according to a company representative, it has a list of roughly thirty people who would teach the programmes from 2027.[1][2] Applications can be submitted only after accreditation is granted, but those interested can already register without obligation. According to the same representative, the admissions procedure would, if all goes well, take place in May and June, possibly also during the summer holidays.[1][2]
By February 2027 Scio wants to tell those interested whether the school can be opened in September or whether the date will have to be postponed.[1][2] For the adult education and development programme it plans to use the National Comparative Examinations; for the innovative entrepreneurship programme it is considering a different option that would also take students' motivation into account.[1][2]
According to the website of the Ministry of Education, Czechia has 26 public, two state and 26 private universities. At the end of 2025 more than 330,500 students were enrolled at them, of whom roughly 33,200 at private institutions.[1]
