Environment Minister Igor Červený (Motoristé) said on 27 October 2026 at the Chamber of Deputies committee for the environment that about 134 of the total 3,500 positions at the Ministry of the Environment and its organisations will be abolished as of 2027. According to the minister these are savings measures, and some of the positions are currently vacant.[1]

Impact on organisations

According to Červený, the changes will leave out only the Czech Hydrometeorological Institute and the Bohemian Switzerland National Park. Posts in national parks that were originally to end before the start of the season were, according to the minister, kept until the end of that period. The last review of the staffing structure is to take place at the turn of the year.[1] According to him, the savings also concern fixed-term positions, for example under the National Recovery Plan, which ends in 2026.[1]

According to the minister, the decision to reduce the number of positions in the organisations was taken by the Ministry of Finance after an agreement at the Úřad vlády České republiky. At the beginning of April, the ministry abolished 38 positions directly in the ministry itself.[1]

Background

At the end of September, the head of the Úřad vlády České republiky, Tünde Bartha, at the initiative of Prime Minister Andrej Babiš (ANO 2011), presented ministers with a proposal to cut the number of jobs in offices by a tenth from January. According to Seznam Zprávy, after ministers raised objections the cabinet interrupted its discussion of the resolution; trade unions criticised the plan.[1] According to the draft budget for 2027, the ministry is to have about CZK 20.96 billion for expenditure, compared with CZK 20.43 billion in 2026.[1]
