On Saturday 3 October 2026 several dozen people gathered on Lesser Town Square in Prague for a rally against the stationing of nuclear weapons on Czech territory and against the government's positions. The rally was called by Ladislav Vrabel, chairman of the movement Česká republika na 1. místě, who according to Forum 24 also organised anti-government demonstrations during the coronavirus pandemic.[1]
Reasons for the rally
The organisers object to the French advanced nuclear deterrence initiative. In their view, taking part in the project could make the Czech Republic a target for Russia. They called on the government to appoint a commissioner who would work on a peaceful settlement of the conflict in Ukraine.[1]
According to Forum 24, the initiative envisages joint exercises and consultations among the participating countries and possibly the temporary stationing of parts of the French nuclear forces outside France, with control remaining in Paris. According to the same source, a number of European states joined the talks, among them Britain, Germany and Poland, most recently Finland. Echo24, according to Forum 24, reported on 1 October 2026 that the Ministry of Defence of the Czech Republic had told France of Czech interest in taking part.[1]
Course of the rally
The rally took place near the Chamber of Deputies of the Parliament of the Czech Republic. Participants brought Czech flags and peace banners, and several speakers appeared on the stage. A few people also came with the flags of NATO, the European Union and Ukraine; Vrabel urged his supporters to let them express a different opinion. The event was guarded by police, including members of an anti-conflict team, and remained peaceful.[1]
