The railway museum is located in the railway station building in Jemnice in the Třebíč region. It opened on 26 September 2026 during the celebrations of the 130th anniversary of the Jemnice – Moravské Budějovice line.[1][2] It exhibits historic equipment that served at the Jedlová station and original furnishings from stations on the line.[1][2]*

Collection

The exhibition was created by local residents who saved historic exhibits from Moravské Budějovice and Jemnice. It also includes the desk of Josef Tichý, the last station master of Jemnice before the station master post was abolished; it forms a memorial corner for the employees who worked on the line, said Martin Kouřil, chairman of the Association for Public Transport in Southwestern Moravia.[1][2] The association runs excursion trains on the line.[1][2]

Operation

The museum is open whenever a weekend excursion train, run on special occasions, arrives at the station, or by arrangement with the Jemnice information centre.[1][2]

History of the station and the line

The Moravské Budějovice – Jemnice line opened on 9 November 1896 as part of a planned but never fully realised connection between southern Moravia and Bohemia – the railway was to run from Moravský Krumlov via Jemnice and Dačice to Jindřichův Hradec and Třeboň, but only the Moravské Budějovice – Jemnice section was built.[1][2] The Jemnice station had a station master until 1974, and until 2006 only a ticket office remained there.[1][2] Regular passenger service on the line ended on 31 December 2010, according to the authorities because of unprofitability.[1][2]

Thanks to the Association for Public Transport in Southwestern Moravia, occasional passenger trains returned to the line in 2014, and since 2018 they have been ordered regularly by the Vysočina Region.[1][2] For 2026 the region orders 9,484.8 train-kilometres, covered by 228 pairs of trains over 66 operating days from April to December except October, with compensation of 1.1 million crowns, said regional spokeswoman Jitka Svatošová.[1][2]

When the museum opened as part of the anniversary celebrations, the first steam train arrived in Jemnice at about 10:30, welcomed by hundreds of people.[1][2]
