In Prachatice in the South Bohemian Region, the Kolečko house for people with paraplegia after a serious injury was ceremonially opened on Thursday 1 October 2026. The facility is meant to serve as a transitional stop on the way back to ordinary life, not as a place of permanent residence. [1][2]

Focus

Clients from all over the country are usually to stay there for three months and try out everyday activities, for example cooking, shopping, sport, study or work. [1][2] Kolečko's director Hana Vojtová said the aim is to prepare people so that they no longer need the facility. [1][2] According to Budějcká Drbna, the first clients are to arrive in November 2026. [2]

Construction and equipment

Construction began in August 2024 in Nemocniční Street, where a maternity hospital used to stand. The barrier-free house offers 12 residential units, a gym, other common areas and a bistro that people from outside can also visit. [1][2] Each client has their own room with a kitchenette and a large bathroom. [1][2] Senator Zbyněk Sýkora took part in the preparation for more than three years, consulting with the director on architectural as well as so-called mental barrier-freeness. [1] Lucie Kozlová, Deputy Governor of the South Bohemian Region, said at the opening that at the start of construction she could not have imagined the result. [1]

Bistro and robots

The house includes a public bistro, in whose operation clients are to take part by receiving orders and serving guests. Two serving robots, Karla and Karel, are to help them. [2] The facility wants to cooperate with a nearby school and with employers and to hold talks and themed evenings. The Czech Paralympic Committee is also to hold its events there. [2]
