The borough of Prague 2 ceremonially opened to the public in September 2026 a reconstructed sports area in Riegrovy sady, located next to the TJ Sokol Královské Vinohrady building [2]. The cost of modernising the sports ground and adding play elements was 8.7 million crowns excluding VAT [2].

Facilities

The sports surfaces were enlarged and a multi-purpose pitch suitable for football and basketball, among other sports, was created [1][2]. New additions include a parkour section, a climbing wall, play elements for children and a smaller fitness zone [1][2]. According to the borough, capacity for sport and exercise in the upper part of the park had long been insufficient [1][2]. The opening was accompanied by a programme in which visitors could try out the facilities with coaches [1][2].

Background

Deputy mayor Jan Recman (ODS) said the renovation is part of a long-term concept for developing the park, which envisages revitalisation and a balance between use of the park and preservation of its natural and historical character [1][2]. Deputy mayor Jan Kolář (ANO) expressed his conviction that the area will be used across generations [1][2]. In 2025 the site still held two unauthorised structures, the Ice Magic ice sculpture exhibition and the Containall sports and cultural centre [2]. This year the borough also completed the renovation of the U Draka playground and plans to renew the retaining wall above the pavement by the TJ Sokol grounds [1].

Plans

A multi-purpose hall for sports and cultural events could be built on the site in the future [2]. According to Recman, several levels of underground garages with an entrance from Polská Street could be built beneath the building; the borough hall intends to discuss the project with the public, heritage officials and the Prague Institute of Planning and Development, and expects an architectural competition [2].
