A hostel in Šumperk was on fire during the night of 6 October 2026. The fire was reported to firefighters at about 2:40 a.m. It started in one of the rooms and spread to the roof of the building.[1][2]

The response

When the firefighters arrived, the building was heavily filled with smoke. According to Lucie Balážová, spokesperson for the regional fire brigade, the firefighters evacuated fourteen people and handed them over to paramedics for examination. Thirteen people were brought out quickly, one tenant remained trapped in a room and the firefighters brought him out wearing a breathing mask.[1][2] According to the spokesperson, two of the evacuated were checked for possible intoxication, and nobody was taken to hospital.[1]

The firefighters brought the fire under control and prevented it from spreading. They fought it from inside and outside, used two aerial ladder trucks to take apart the roof structure, searched for hot spots and put out remaining embers.[2] Professional firefighters from Šumperk and Zábřeh and volunteer firefighters from Šumperk, Nový Malín, Bludov and Velké Losiny took part.[2]

Consequences

An evacuation bus arrived for the residents of the hostel. The firefighters transported some of them to replacement accommodation, which they arranged together with the town. The surroundings of the building were cordoned off with tape because of the risk of a wall collapsing.[1][2]

A hostel in Šumperk also burned at the end of August 2026, but that was a different building. Police are investigating the event on suspicion of general endangerment through negligence.[1]
