Frontex is a European Union agency that helps protect the external borders. On 26 October 2026 it published the results of a joint European police operation involving a large part of the EU member states, including Czechia and Slovakia, as well as Albania, Kosovo, Moldova, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Serbia and Switzerland.[1]
Police officers, customs officers and other services concentrated on border crossings and ports, where they checked more than 150,000 people and nearly 130,000 vehicles. The priority was detecting stolen vehicles, which are often used to smuggle drugs, cash or weapons. The cases included a vehicle stolen in Germany that was found on a motorway near Warsaw thanks to cooperation between German and Polish police, and a car stolen in France and heading for Serbia that was stopped by Serbian and Croatian authorities. [1] According to the agency's summary, 334 people were detained and 2,202 migrants without the necessary documents were detected. More than 10.6 million cigarettes, about 2.4 tonnes of marijuana, forged documents, firearms and ammunition were seized.[1] Cash in euros, dollars, pounds and zlotys was also seized, in the case of euros amounting to hundreds of thousands. [1]
Since the cooperation was expanded in the summer of 2026, 130 Frontex officers have been working in Bosnia and Herzegovina, helping to detect false documents and monitor the border. [2]
In the first half of 2026, roughly four thousand people tried to enter the European Union illegally via Bosnia, which is one fifth fewer than in the previous year. [2]
