Eemshaven is a port in the Netherlands where a liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal has operated since September 2022. It was the first LNG terminal in Europe to enter service since the start of the war in Ukraine. The first ship for Czechia, the tanker Gaslog Georgetown from the United States, docked there on 20 September 2022 [1][3].

The terminal

The facility can process eight billion cubic metres of gas a year, of which up to three billion may go to Czechia. Besides the energy company ČEZ, the companies Shell and Engie have also booked capacity there [1][3]. ČEZ describes the terminal as floating [2].

Deliveries for Czechia

According to ČEZ, by 1 October 2026 the terminal had handled 92 ships carrying gas intended for Czechia. They brought a total of 8.2 billion cubic metres, which corresponds to roughly 14 months of the country's gas consumption. Most of the ships came from the United States and, according to the company, the deliveries contained no Russian gas. By then, 20 ships chartered by ČEZ with 1.8 billion cubic metres of gas had arrived at the port in 2026 [1][2][3].

ČEZ chief executive Daniel Beneš said that the deliveries had helped secure gas for Czech households and industry even during the energy crisis, and that LNG flows into Eemshaven without interruption despite the war in the Middle East [1][3].

Capacity lease

ČEZ has its capacity leased until September 2027. In 2026 the government instructed the company to negotiate an extension of the lease; according to the Czech News Agency, the terminal operator had not yet concluded talks with interested parties. Besides Eemshaven, ČEZ wants to use the onshore terminal in Stade, Germany, in the future and has a contract with the Algerian company Sonatrach [1][2][3].
