After more than four years Romana Ptáčková has left her post as coach of the Czech women's national basketball team. Her assistant Martin Bašta will replace her temporarily, the Czech Basketball Federation announced.

The Czech Basketball Federation announced on 29 October 2026 that Romana Ptáčková had left her post as head coach of the Czech women's national basketball team after more than four years. She left at her own request, although she had a valid contract. Assistant Petr Treml also left the team. She will be temporarily replaced by her assistant Martin Bašta, who is head coach of the club USK Prague. The federation's committee has begun the search for a new permanent coach.[1][2]
Ptáčková led the national team from May 2022 and became the first woman in the role of head coach of the Czech senior team. In 2023 she led the team to seventh place at the European Championship; in 2025 it finished sixth. The national team qualified for the 2026 world championship, where it finished fifteenth with three defeats.[1][2]
Ptáčková said that when her contract was renewed she had agreed orally that she might leave in 2026, and she regarded the world championship as a suitable moment to close one cycle. According to her, it was demanding to combine leading the national team with her work at the club Hradec Králové, where she works at the same time.[1]
Bašta will lead the team in the November part of qualification for the 2027 European Championship. His assistants will be Adam Konvalinka and former international Tereza Vyoralová. The Czech women's team will begin qualification on 10 November 2026 in Oviedo against Spain, then is to play at home against Croatia and on 17 November against Bulgaria. Two teams from this Group J will advance to the final tournament.[1]
