The apartment fire in Ostrava-Mariánské Hory started on the afternoon of Thursday 1 October 2026 in the street Výstavní. Almost thirty people were in the apartment building at the time of the fire, of whom five inhaled smoke and were handed over to the care of paramedics. The incident required intervention by firefighters, police and the medical rescue service, and became the subject of a criminal investigation on suspicion of the misdemeanour of general endangerment through negligence.[1][2]*
Course of the intervention
Firefighters learned of the fire shortly after half past three in the afternoon. Professional units from the Ostrava-Zábřeh and Ostrava-Fifejdy stations and volunteer firefighters from Radvanice and Nová Ves were dispatched to the scene.[1] Already upon the units' arrival, flames lashing from the windows of the apartment on the fourth above-ground floor were visible, and the apartment's living room was completely engulfed by the fire, stated the regional firefighters' spokeswoman Kamila Langerová.[1] An adult and two children who were in the apartment when the fire started, as well as another 23 people from the apartment building, left the building before the firefighters arrived. The units had to rescue one more person from a smoke-filled apartment on another floor.[1] The fire was localised within ten minutes of the firefighters' arrival, and the damage was preliminarily estimated at two million crowns.[1]
Injuries and treatment
A total of five people, two small children and three adults, ended up in the care of paramedics.[2] All of those affected inhaled combustion fumes, and one of the women also suffered minor superficial burns on her lower limbs, stated the spokesman of the Moravian-Silesian paramedics, Lukáš Humpl. All of those affected were out of danger to life and, after treatment, were taken to Městská nemocnice Ostrava.[1][2]
Investigation
The cause of the fire remains the subject of an investigation, in which police officers are also involved. According to Ostrava police spokeswoman Nikol Bočková, steps in criminal proceedings were initiated in the matter on suspicion of the misdemeanour of general endangerment through negligence.[1][2] A forensic technician and an expert examined the site of the fire.[1]
